Overview

Step back in time with us on a jour­ney to the heart of Out­back Queens­land as we board the Spir­it of the Out­back rail ser­vice from Bris­bane to Lon­greach. A mem­o­rable and unique way to see sights you wouldn’t ordi­nar­i­ly encounter on a road trip. We catch the train one way to Lon­greach for our 3‑night stay in this unique loca­tion and trav­el via lux­u­ry coach for our return journey.

We will vis­it the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, cruise the Thom­son Riv­er and enjoy a vis­it to a work­ing cat­tle sta­tion along with the QAN­TAS founders Muse­um, just to name a few, and head to Win­ton to enjoy the Waltz­ing Matil­da Cen­tre and the Age of Dinosaurs Museum.

This tour offers a blend of nat­ur­al beau­ty, his­tor­i­cal sig­nif­i­cance, and out­back adven­ture, mak­ing it a quin­tes­sen­tial Aus­tralian trav­el experience.

Moderate/​Active
Mod­er­ate activ­i­ty, stairs, and stand­ing peri­ods. Guests should be able to walk longer dis­tances, climb stairs, and nav­i­gate uneven terrain. 

Suit­able for those who are mod­er­ate­ly fit, lead­ing semi-active lives, com­fort­able with long days, and expect­ing some phys­i­cal exertion. 


Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Monday, 22 September — Launceston to Brisbane

    You will be collected from your home and transferred to Launceston Airport where you will meet your guide for your tour as we make our way to Brisbane on our first leg of this tour. On arrival we make our way to our Brisbane accommodation where we check in for one night. After freshening up from our day of travel we meet for our tour briefing followed by our welcome dinner onsite at our hotel.

  • Day 2: Tuesday, 23 September — Brisbane to Longreach

    Depart for Longreach - Spirit of the Outback

    Today, it is time to head to Longreach. Get ready for a key highlight of this tour - The 'Spirit of the Outback' train through to Longreach. The journey between the two towns is approximately 26hrs and will provide an exceptional insight into the history and cultures of Australia. The landscape through the townships is ever-changing and is sure to offer you a unique adventure whilst onboard. There are many stops along the way, offering passengers a chance to stretch their legs and enjoy the atmosphere of what the country towns have to offer. Throughout the journey, the Spirit of the Outback provides comfortable seating and sleeper accommodation, along with dining options that highlight local produce. It’s a memorable way to experience the vastness and beauty of Queensland.

  • Day 3: Wednesday, 24 September — Longreach

    Train - Spirit of the Outback / Longreach arrival

    Awake this morning onboard the 'Spirit of the Outback' to enjoy a delicious hot country or continental breakfast. We continue the extraordinary train journey toward Longreach. As we approach Longreach, the landscape transforms into a scenery of rugged natural beauty, a vast difference from the green hills, showcasing the diversity of Queensland's geography. We will be enjoying lunch onboard the train as we travel the many stops along the way to the outback.

    Upon arriving in Longreach we will be transferred to our accommodation for the evening.

  • Day 4: Thursday, 25 September — Longreach

    Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, Starlight’s Cruise Experience

    Start the day with the Cobb and Co Stagecoach Experience including the stagecoach ride on the old Longreach to Windorah mail route, home-baked scones and tea at our cafe, followed by a vintage Aussie movie. At 12pm watch the Old Time Tent Show with a billy-can lunch. Transfer back to your accommodation.

    At around 4.30pm, we’ll picked you up and take you to the banks of the Thomson River for our Starlight’s Cruise Experience. It includes a hearty stockman’s dinner around the campfire with bush poetry and the Starlight’s Spectacular Sound & Light Picture Show featuring an exclusive movie that celebrates legendary local hero Harry Redford. BYO drinks.

  • Day 5: Friday, 26 September — Longreach

    Nogo Station Experience, Qantas Founders Museum, Stonegrill® Dining Experience

    The first day takes you from your accommodation to the real heart of outback life at the Kinnon’s historic Nogo Station. Be inspired and entertained by stories of pioneering life and working station reality with your Outback Pioneers host. Marvel at the merino story in the historic shearing sheds. Experience the incredible station safari in an open-top, double-decker bus. Visit Captain Starlight’s stockyards and have a traditional saddlebag lunch under the gum trees.

    Transfer to the Qantas Founders Museum (entry included). Take your time to enjoy the museum and 90-minute Jet Tour. Time to freshen up before your Stonegrill® dining experience at The Welcome Home.

  • Day 6: Saturday, 27 September — Winton

    Winton Discovery Day Tour

    It’s a 6.35am start for a full-day tour to Winton. Visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, Dinosaur Canyon and March of the Titanosaurs exhibition plus the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Enjoy lunch at the historic North Gregory Hotel and take a stroll down the Main Street before returning to Longreach. Dine at The Welcome Home restaurant in the evening.

  • Day 7: Sunday, 28 September — Longreach

    Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame

    Visit the iconic Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the five galleries before lunch at the museum café (at your own cost). Return to your accommodation and decide on dinner. Try one of the local restaurants or order takeaway...   • Day 8: Monday, 29 September — Longreach to Brisbane

    Departure for Brisbane

    Pack and say goodbye to Longreach. Today after breakfast, we will have some free time to explore the township of Longreach, you will have the opportunity to purchase yourself some lunch before we are transferred to the airport to for our flight to Brisbane. On arrival to Brisbane, we will be transferred to our accommodation where we will have our farewell dinner.

  • Day 9: Tuesday, 30 September — Brisbane to Launceston

    Departure for Launceston

    This morning, after breakfast, we check out of our hotel and make our way to the airport for our flight back to Launceston. Our McDermotts team will meet us at the airport to take you back to your home*

HOME PICK UP SERVICE

Ser­vice Avail­abil­i­ty: Our home pick­up ser­vice is avail­able in select sub­urbs of Launce­s­ton and the West Tamar area. Please ensure your book­ing includes a cor­rect and up-to-date address. Avail­abil­i­ty may vary depend­ing on the tour and par­tic­i­pant num­bers with­in the des­ig­nat­ed areas. In some cas­es, you may be required to meet at the Legana depot or as arranged by the Trav­el Club operators.

Pick­up Points: The exact pick­up time and loca­tion for each mul­ti­day tour will be con­firmed by our team via email or postal cor­re­spon­dence pri­or to the tour.

Out-of-Area Ser­vice: If your loca­tion falls out­side the avail­able ser­vice area, our office will reach out to dis­cuss alter­na­tive solu­tions or options.
