Take on one of Tasmania’s most iconic alpine challenges with a small-group Cradle Mountain Summit expedition.

Rising to 1,545 metres, the Cradle Mountain summit offers a demanding yet rewarding full-day hike through rugged alpine terrain, including steep ascents, exposed sections, and rock scrambling near the summit.

This is a premium, safety-focused experience with a maximum of four guests and two professional wilderness guides, ensuring a highly personalised and flexible day in the mountains.

Duration: 10 – 12 hours

Distance: Approx. 15 – 16 km

Grade: 5 / Difficult (alpine terrain with scrambling)

Conditions on the mountain change rapidly — each departure is shaped by weather, terrain, and group capability, with summit attempts made when safe to do so.

  • Day 1: Cradle Mountain

Please note: All routes are subject to change based on weather and safety conditions.

    Cradle Mountain Summit Expedition

Departing from the Cradle Mountain area, your day begins at Dove Lake as you ascend toward Hanson’s Peak. This initial climb gains elevation quickly, opening up expansive alpine views.

From Hanson’s Peak, the route continues through the Twisted Lakes region, offering reflections, open plateau landscapes, and spectacular views back toward Cradle Mountain.

Moving along the Face Track beneath the mountain, you traverse rugged alpine terrain before joining the Overland Track near Kitchen Hut.

From here, the route steepens into the summit section, where large boulder fields and exposed scrambling lead toward the peak. Fixed chains assist in sections of the climb.

If conditions allow, time is spent at the summit to rest, refuel, and take in panoramic views across the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The descent follows an alternative route via Marion’s Lookout, Wombat Pool, and Lake Lilla before returning safely to the starting point.
